Openingdocument with wildcard through network impossible in Word 2

Hi Microsoft community,

We tried everything. Even our Office reseller tried, bit we could not solve
this issue.

We are looking to upgrade to Office 2007 but there is one piece of
functionality that does not work in Word 2007 that works fine under Word
2003, and even works fine in Excel 2007.

Normally the functionality is utilised by our business application but we
where able to reproduce the incident in the START => RUN command environment
under Windows XP.

THE PROBLEM.

We are not able a open a Word .doc document that resides on a network drive
with the following command:
c:\\progra~1\\micros~2\\office12\\winword.exe
"\\METTERWOON3a\VOL2\Usrafd\VvE-Beheer\VvEDocumenten\VVE1914*.DOC"

THIS command also does not work:
c:\\progra~1\\micros~2\\office12\\winword.exe
\\METTERWOON3a\VOL2\Usrafd\VvE-Beheer\VvEDocumenten\VVE1914*.DOC

ANd THIS command also does not work:
winword \\METTERWOON3a\VOL2\Usrafd\VvE-Beheer\VvEDocumenten\VVE1914*.DOC

When giving the full document name (that contains spaces) it works just fine:
c:\\progra~1\\micros~2\\office12\\winword.exe
"\\METTERWOON3a\VOL2\Usrafd\VvE-Beheer\VvEDocumenten\VVE1914_Laan van
Meerdervoort 441 441A 443.DOC"

When the document is placed on my local PC drive the command works fine:
c:\\progra~1\\micros~2\\office12\\winword.exe "c:\temp\VVE1914*.DOC"

We never had this problem in Word 2003. The command (that normally is
executed by our business application) works just fine:
c:\\progra~1\\micros~2\\office12\\winword.exe
"\\METTERWOON3a\VOL2\Usrafd\VvE-Beheer\VvEDocumenten\VVE1914*.DOC"

Strangely enough Excel 2007 does not have the problem. This command works
fine:
excel \\METTERWOON3a\VOL2\Usrafd\VvE-Beheer\VvEDocumenten\test*.xls

Even when we open the Word document with Excel 2007, Excel is able to find
the file. It gives an error (showing the correct full file name) because
Excel can not open the Word format; but it finds the file:
excel \\METTERWOON3a\VOL2\Usrafd\VvE-Beheer\VvEDocumenten\VVE1914*.DOC

We have no clue what is wrong. It might be a simple setting in MS Word 2007
but we can not find it. I hope it is not a bug. Because we really want to
move to Office 2007 a.s.a.p.

BTW we do not get any error messages. MS Word 2007 opens showing an empty
document. It does not display the document we want to open.

I hope you can help us out.

Regards,

Anwer from the Netherlands
