Operating in Safe Mode.

I have Windows XP 2000 and everytime I try to execute a C: drive scan or
defrag my computer hangs up after an hour or so. I was told that I need to
log on in safe mode,but the help instructions do not "help". I have tried
hitting the F8 key while the restart option is running to no avail....any
ideas

There is Windows XP operating system and there is a Windows 2000
operating system. This is a newsgroup dealing with MS Office application
suite issues. You seem to be somewhat confused as to what you have and
where to ask. Start with the computer turned OFF, power it on and then
start tapping the F8 key, this should get you into safe mode. If this
does not work please contact tech support at the place you got your
computer.
