Optimal page width?

P

Paul Kraemer

Hi,

I am using FP2000 to create a simple website that uses
tables to position images and text on my pages. So far,
I have been trying to keep all my pages just under 640
pixels wide with the idea that they will be viewable on
most peoples screens without having to scroll
horizontally.

I was just wondering, is this a valid concern? Do alot
of people still use screens with such low resolution.
Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you,
Paul

I would design for 800 by 600. The site will then fit 95% of the viewers browsers.

IMHO:
750px wide is good enough for a fixed table. if your site scrolls in a 640
window it won't be the only one.

you may also want to experiment with setting up your tables in %. that way
it'll spread out over the screen regardless of size. I used to rig them up
to throw no scroll down to 640 but lately I've only worried about not
throwing scroll bars down to 800.

Only if you are serving a demographic that is identical to the one for which
that statistic applies, however. Remember, statistics may not mean anything
in *your* target market.

Hi Paul,

I would only concern myself with a width of 750 pixels or use a screen percentage.
