order of names in address book

Already answered several times.
If you want to use the Outlook Address Book, you must be in Corp/Workgroup
mode.
Your unwitting attempt to add Microsoft Exchange server when you do not
connect to one has corrupted your Outlook profile beyond all hope.
That is why we keep telling you to create a new profile from scratch and add
Internet Mail as your transport. Brian has already answered all of this.

Now you've lost me. Should I be in Corp. workgroup or IMO? I'm in corp.
workgroup but I can't get to Services? When I click on Tools/services,
nothing happens. My address book is sorted by first name and I can't
change it.

OK. I'll make the change, but can I keep all my contacts on the same

of a single person?

Bob

You interpreted incorrectly.
Corporate/Workgroup mode in no way means you must use Exchange Server. Nor
can you, obviously, since you are not connected to one.
You use your same Internet Mail Account as you did in IMO. The mail
transport you need is Internet Mail, not Exchange Server.

You're right. But in another exchange with Brian Tillman under
"transferring settings" begun 1/31, I explained some differences I
was
noticing between the way my new Outlook was acting and the old one.
He
i.d. the problem: the Exchange server option allowed me to do things
I
couldn't do in IMO - at least that's the way I interpreted his
answer.
Here's a list of the issues I was having:

*On my old computer (Win98), when I opened the address book and searched
for
my "Me," I found three entries, each with one of my three email
addresses.
On my new computer I find only one entry that I need to go to
Tools/Actions/Send mail to and then pick one of my names. I'd prefer the
old way.

*On my old computer, I may have a contact entry that doesn't have an
email
address. In such cases it does NOT show up in my address book. But
on
the
new computer it does.

*Under both Contacts and Address Book, the menu options are
different,
even
though it's the same program (though I may have updated the program
my
downloading Office updates from MS.) Why is that?

*Under the win98, when I went to the address book and then
tools/options,
an "Addressing" box came up that allowed me to choose from "Show this
address list first," "keep personal addresses in" and "When sending mail,
check names using these address lists in the following order". Contacts
were in all three. I can't even find that box on the new computer under
XP.

It's the first two issues that bug me. I want to be able to keep all my
contacts on the same list but not have my email address book
cluttered
with names with no email addresses.

And there are many people for whom I have several email addresses and
I
need to choose based on where they are at the time. I'd rather have all
three show up as different lines in my add book.

But why can't you just create a new profile in Control Panel?
A new profile won't keep asking you for Exchange server.

Outlook 2000 V. 9.0.0.6627

Type of email account? My email is delivered thru Network
solutions
mail server and goes out thru Cox's smtp server.

What generated the problem was I tried to go to services and
nothing
happened. I went to services because after I changed from Internet
Only to Corporate Workforce (as I was on my old computer) and put
in
the MS Office disc to change it, I noticed I couldn't get to
services
any longer. But in the interim I had deleted IPLink+ from some
window
within service I believe. I thought it was a window that allowed me to
change the options on what server I use for different account but
now I
can't even find that on my old computer.

Provide your Outlook version and the type of email account you
use.

OK. This is over my head. I tried to create a new profile but
it
asked for the name of my Microsoft exchange server. I couldn't give
it one. I tried typing my email address in and eventually I got a
message that "Action could not be completed. Server containing
global address list is no longer available. You can reconnect to
a
different server by restarting Outlook or retry operation when
the
server is reachable."

The other day, I deleted something called IPLink+ and that may
have
caused the problem. IPLink was something that was loaded on my
old
computer years ago, and I apparently forgot why so I deleted it.

I still can't get to "Services." Do I need to restore the
setting of
my Outlook fro the old computer on to this one?

As I said, I'm over my head here in that I don';t know what these
things (like MS Exchange) do.

I can't even open "services" now. It does nothing. This is the
first this has happened and might be the first time I tried it since
I "reconfigured mail support" for "Corporate Workgroup" from
"Internet Mail Only."

I didn't try to remove and re-add my address book. It seemed
to be
working fine except for the name ordering.

Bob

Remove/Readd the Outlook Address Book to restore the
connection to
your Contacts Folder.
Then to set the sort order:
Tools menu > Services > Highlight the Outlook Address Book service
Click Properties > Set sort order

After finding out that during a transfer of Outlook from one
computer to the other, I had to reconfigure the support to
Corporate workgroup. But when I did I found hat my address
book
was now in alphabetically order by FIRST name. I want it by last
name.

When I go to Address Book Tools/options I get a message that says
address book options could not be displayed. You need more memory
or system resources. Close some applications and try again.
I
did. I even restarted the computer, but with only Outlook
open I
still get that message.

Any suggestions? thanks.

So I still have three problems:
1. Can't get to my services within Outlook
2. Have these blank entries in my address book
3. Can' get to toll/options in Address Book.

For the first and third problems, I'd first try a Help>Detect and Repair (if
OL 2000 supports that) or a Repair of Outlook (or Office, which ever is
listed) from Control Panel>Add and Remove Programs and if that didn't help,
I'd try creating a brand-new mail profile and adding things in from the
beginning.

For the second problem, I'd create a new PST (File>New>Personal Folders
File), make it my default delivery location (you'll need Tools>Services for
this, or I think it can be done through the profile in Control Panel>Mail)
and then copy everything except the offending entries into the new PST. I'd
then close the old PST (right-click>Close on its root in Folder List) and,
after closing Outlook, delete the old PST (or not, if you want to keep it as
a backup).

The detect and repair didn't seem to help. I even re-booted.

I had created a profile a few days ago and while logged on, it downloaded a
couple of messages. I then created a brand new profile, but when I logged
on I went to an inbox that had those four messages in it. I then deleted
that profile I created a few days ago, the one that downloaded those four
messages. I created a new profile. When I did, those four messages were in
it. I assume that was because I didn't change the name of the pst files.

But still, when I click on tools/services in that new profile I just
created, nothing opens. And I also get the problem of the not enough
resources message to open the options on the address book.

If a new profile is eventually what I need and can get a new one to
accomplish those two functions, I'll need to know how to re-direct my old
..pst files (inbox and other folders to that new profile. But as of now, I'm
not sure that will fix my problem.

By the way, I appreciate your patience.

Bob

I then created a new profile, but whenever

It would seem that when you define a new profile, it's reusing your existing
PST, since you see old messages.

Try creating a new PST in the profile. When you add the Personal Folders
service, point it at a file other than the existing PST. If Personal
Folders is added automatically to the profile, delete it and readd it,
specifying a new PST. You can always add the existing PST as a second PST
and either keep it that way or move the messages it contains to the new one.

I created a new profile. I'm not sure how to "create a new pst in the
profile." The wizard gives me the option of a mailbox.pst. I renamed it
mailbox2.pst, thinking that would be "creating a new pst in the profile."
If it is, it still didn't solve my two issues. Also, I tried configuring it
manually and again gave it a new .pst file name but still didn't fix the
problems.

Well, I've out of ideas, then. Sorry.
