Organization Charts-Office 2003

In the Office 2000, you could display subordinates without a box...just the
text. (The boxes take up too much room when you have many subordinates) You
selected this through the style menu. How do you do this in Office 2003?

Starting with MS Office XP the older Org chart applet
(licensed for Office 94/Word 6) was retired in favor
of the MS Office diagramming tool. The older tool
is available as a download if you prefer it.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011402441033.aspx

It also has a 'big brother' (more fully featured and
updated) version available at http://orgplus.com

In the diagramming tool you can use the 'Autoformat'
button on the Org Chart toolbar to select one of the
predefined template looks or use Format=>Borders and
shadings on each box to remove the lines (the text is
still laid out in a text box autoshape.
Disabling Layout=>Autolayout from the Org chart tool
bar will let you resize items manually.

We are not going to go back to the old version for org charts. I was hoping
there was an easier way to do this in the new program. We don't display all
subordinates without the box, just some...so autoformat won't work. I guess
we will have to remove the lines and shading, and resize each box manually.

Thanks for the help! Happy Holidays!

Bob,

Below you note that MS Org Chart was retired in favor of MS Office
Diagramming tool. Is this diagramming tool a stand alone applet? Where can
I get information on this tool? Specifically, I am interested in the API for
it to allow a custom business application to generate organization chart
documents.

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

The MS Office Diagramming tool is built into
Office XP and Office 2003 and it's somewhat
limited in its capability.

You may want to check on http://msdn.microsoft.com/office
for information on the API and automation as well as with the folks
in the Office developer's newsgroup.

MS Office Visio (http://office.microsoft.com/visio and
http://microsoft.com/office/prodinfo/visio )
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/CH010191941033.aspx
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/FX011406321033.aspx
has a much more robust capability for creating Orgcharts
from data files as does http://orgplus.com
