out of office not working

We have an SBS 2000 server and from that i have a client machine
running outlook 2000, my account is also set to forward all mail to an
external email account as well as delivering to my exchange mail box.

When i've enabled the out of office assistant in the office last week
it didn't appear to work for external contacts , and for internal
contacts only worked for the first email they sent to me.

Anyone got any ideas?
