Outlook 2000 and new email sound

I am using Outlook 2000 and Windows 2000 Pro. A while back
my new email sound suddenly became a "bloop" sound. I have
tried to change the sound file, changed options in
Outlook, searched the TechNet, searched the web, etc. I do
not know what caused this to happen. I think that I had
installed some Microsoft patches from within "Automatic
Updates" right before thsi started happening. Does anyone
have any suggestions about where I might look for this
problem?

Does the sound play correct in Control Panel-> Sounds and Multimedia-> New
Mail Notification?

Yes, it plays correctly there... have also tried to change
to different sounds... same problem...
