Outlook 2000 needs Microsoft Exchange Server?

I'm trying to install Outlook 2000 on my desktop. When I open the program it
asks me for my Microsoft Exchange Server and my mailbox. I don't know what
those are and don't think I have any. After canceling that out it gives me a
few error codes and then opens but without any of the Outlook Shortcuts. If I
try to access the calendar or address book it says I don't have a profile.
I've installed the same program on my laptop and it works fine. Both are
running XP home edition. Any help would be appriciated.

You need to choose Internet Mail Only mode when intstalling Outlook 2000 if
you're not going to use Exchange server. You probably chose
Corporate/Workgroup mode by mistake.

.....although you can happily use C/W mode with POP mail only. To the OP - go
to control panel, mail, and view the properties of your mail profile. Remove
the Exchange Server service. Add your Internet Mail service, PST file,
whatnot, if they aren't there already.

Jocelyn,

Thanks for thr reply. I believe you're right about choosing the wrong mode
on set up. The problem now is that I've unistalled/reinstalled it at least 5
times and it doesn't give me that option anymore. It just starts up where I
left off. Any ideas? Thanks.

Working from memory here....if you start Outlook and go to Tools | Options
| Mail Format you'll find a "Reconfigure Mail Support" button. Click that
and it will let you change to Internet Only mode.
I might have a name or two wrong there but if you poke around in Tools
| Options you should find it.
