Outlook 2000 runs in the background?

Am I correct in assuming that because Outlook 2000 is my default email
program that it runs in the background in Windows XP Home Edition? There is
always 1, 2 or 3 instances of it running under "processes" in the task
manager.

Look for 3rd party programs that are keeping it resident. Examples of
programs that cause this are WinFax, ActiveSync, Microsoft Word (when using
Word as your e-mail editor and Word is running, Antivirus, .etc
