Outlook 2002 as default email

I'm new to Outlook. I am currently using Earthlink as my
default email. If I want to use Outlook 2002 for email -
do I have to make it the default email to send? I've
already turned off the receive email in Outlook.

Also, I tried to send a merged email with Outlook as the
default and it looked like it was sending - but I can't
find it in my sent, outbox or draft folders. I checked my
preferences and they look correct.
