Outlook 2002 slows computer

I have Outlook 2002 running on XP Professional. Having it open slows the
rest of my computer, especially during a send/receive. I've been keeping the
task manager open and have noticed that it typically uses almost 100% of the
CPU usage. Is this common? I am unable to do other work on the computer
without first closing Outlook. This is very unproductive to the business I
work in, as email within the business is the primary form of communication.
Is it possible for Outlook to run without hogging the CPU?

I've answered my own question. I run OfficeCalendar to synchronize the
Outlook calendars and task folders. I have not payed attention to the length
of time it takes for the folders to synchronize, and I've had it set to sync
every 10 minutes. Apparently, it takes longer than 10 minutes to sync, so
it's been "compounding" on itself, so to speak. It's this process that uses
up most of the CPU. I reset the program to sync every 2 hours and Outlook
(and the rest of the computer) work just fine now.
