Outlook 2003 Slow to open/close messages and high CPU usage

Aproximately 3 weeks ago, my Outlook 2003 application began taking an
extremely long time to respond when opening or closing messages, and the CPU
usage of outlook.exe is spiking up to 40-50% during this delay, which
typically is at least 5-10 seconds per message. I noticed an update relased
late June that I uninstalled, but no change. I don't see anything in the KB
similar to this issue, and I have no log errors. Ideas?
