Outlook 2003 address book sending and receiving

Yesterday, I noticed that Outlook 2003 was attempting to perform a task:
Outlook Address Book Sending and Receiving...

Is this normal (or new to 2003) or is this a virus? I have Norton 2003
running and no mention of virus (all updates up to date)...

If you are running a cached mailbox against exchange, it is normal. (once every 24 hours the offline address book is refreshed.)
