Outlook 2003 auto checking for mail

When Outlook starts it doesn't check for mail. At work I'm familiar with it
checking on startup. It also doesn't check every 5 minutes like I have it
set to. It will however check manually. I use AVG Free Edition. Does that
hinder. Whatzup?

Tools -> Send and Receive Settings -> Send and Receive Groups
Enable the option to poll

That's the navigation for OL2002. You never mentioned WHICH version of
Outlook that you use.

My question says Outlook 2003. Beyond that it's SP2, Standard for Teachers
and Students. (11.6568.6568) And under Sending and Receieving I do not see
the words "polling" however the 3 boxes under [Setting for group "All
Accounts"] are checked. In the Send Group box - All accounts .............
Online Only. Thanks, for taking time to help.

For Outlook 2003 go to Tools, Options, Mail Setup. In the Send/Receive
section check the "Send immediately when connected" option and click the
Send/Receive button for other options.

Gregg, thanks, it is checked?? Would the Pop Up blocker be a problem here?
I appreciate the thought!

Oops. When the message was opened to reply to it, the window primarily
shows the message and the one-line Subject is at the top which I didn't look
at while composing a reply.

The options "Schedule an automatic send/receive ever N minutes" is what you
are looking for (or something very similarly worded in the OL2003 version).
I said "polling" because I really didn't want to spell out those overly
long-winded option titles. Sounds like you have all the online polling
options enabled. Is the poll interval greater than zero?

When you are defining the Send/Receive groups, click the Edit button on the
group that contains your accounts and make sure each is enabled (so it is
included in every mail poll) and also check each account is enabled for
Receive and Send.

When you perform a manual check, just exactly what do you do to do the
manual check that works?

no, but a anti-spam or virus scanner could cause problems.

Now I have solved it and here it is. On the SEND/RECIEVE button, on Outlook
Menu (at the top) there is a drop down menu. I have never explored the
options on that button, but just did, and found a separate option for
SEND/RECIEVE SETTINGS/ DISABLE SCHEDULED SEND/RECIEVE. Somehow it had become
checked?? Unchecked now, things are working. This setting/option shows up
nowhere else but here. THANKS AGAIN!
