Outlook 2003 Auto Retrieve of Emails

Have I missed something? Outlook 2003 has started automatically downloading
messages from my ISP's mail server even when Outlook has not been started on
my PC or after it has been shut down.

After this has happened, the mail backup routines fail with a message along
the lines of "another program has locked part of your email system".

Finally, Outlook will no longer open a URL embedded in a message. I've
looked into the Security settings but cannot find anything obvious.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Not possible. Outlook must be running to download mail.
After this has happened, the mail backup routines fail with a message

More proof that Outlook is still running. Use Task Manager's Processes tab
to see if "OUTLOOK.EXE" still appears. Also make sure that if you have a
PDA that you have uncradled it.
Finally, Outlook will no longer open a URL embedded in a message. I've
looked into the Security settings but cannot find anything obvious.

What happens when you try?

Hi

Yes, Outlook.exe is still running as a process but not as an application. I
normally close Outlook via the X in the top right hand corner.

When I try open a URL, I get the File Open dialogue with Outlook looking for
an exe file.

Then something you have is keeping Outlook open. See if something here
helps: http://www.slipstick.com/problems/close.htm
When I try open a URL, I get the File Open dialogue with Outlook

If IE6 is your browser, open it and click Tools>Internet
Options>Programs>Reset Web Settings. Otherwise, browse to the web browser's
EXE and select it.
