Outlook 2003 Autoresolve

I'm using Outlook 2003 and the "autoresolve" function is not working.

I've read that when I'm typing in the "To:" field that Outlook should look
for email addresses in Contacts to complete the address.

However, the only addresses that are "resolved" are those that are cached. I
mean the addresses that I've addressed previously.

Can anyone tell me if this autoresolve function actually exists and if it
does, how to I make it work?

Autocomplete knows only about addresses you've already used. Autoresolution
can look at any contacts folder. Set the autoresolution list(s) in Tools |
Address Book, Tools | Options.

Hi Sue,

Thank you for your reply. I have contacts listed twice under the dialog box
your pointed to in the "When sending mail..." portion

Maybe I'm unclear on what the function of "Autoresolution" is. I thought
that it would looking within my contacts when I began typing in an email
address in the To: portion of an email message and begin completing it for
me.

Is there something preventing this behaviour?
Why is contacts listed twice?

Autoresolution looks at the address lists you specified, sequentially, after
you type in part of a recipient name. It works in the background, rather
than presenting an immediate choice. If it finds a unique match, it
underlines the address in black. If it finds multiple matches or none, it
underlines it in red squiggle. You can either just send the message to see
the choices or you can right-click the red underlined name and choose which
address to use. The next time you type in that part of a recipient name,
Outlook should use the autoresolution choice that you made and underline it
in dotted green.

I just gave it another try and it worked as you described.

I guess I was expecting it to perform the same as the cached values.

Is there any particular reason that "Contacts" are listed twice?

Sue Mosher [MVP-Outlook]

You might have two folders named Contacts or the Outlook Address Book might
be having a problem. Removing the Outlook Address Book then adding it back
in will probably resolve it.

Open your account properties and remove the Outlook Address Book service and
reinstall it. That will reduce the number of Contacts to one.
