outlook 2003 cached exchange mode

I really like the Outlook 2003 cached exchange mode, especially for remote
laptop users. I was wondering if there was an equivalent setup in Outlook
2000 or Outlook XP. I would like to set those systems up the same way. I
know that it allows you to work offline but how does Outlook know to
automatically look for new emails when it is connected? I hope this makes
sense.

older versions only have the offline mode and they should detect if you are
connected and sync.
