Outlook 2003 connect over dialup and VPN but NOT on corporate LAN

Here's a weird one for all you knowledgeable gurus out there:

Situation 1.
Usine my company laptop, I dial up 56k connection to internet, run up
my company's Cisco VPN software and get my zonealarm updated policy.
Start Outlook 2003 - 2 seconds later it's chatting away to my Exchange
server, sweet as a nut.

Situation 2.
Connect the same laptop directly to my company's LAN, and it will have
none of it!!
Get an error saying that the exchange server is unavailable, and that
outlook must be online.
- I can also recreate this situation at home by using my home LAN, ICS
and VPN software, and again it fails.

There seems to be some setting that is awry between my LAN connection,
and my dialup.

Also, I get the error message immediately, for example trying to do a
"Check name", as if it's not even bothering to have a look for the
server.

I have checked all the RPC registry settings, as per KBs and postings,
but have run out of ideas.

Please help me - I'm going nuts!!

Thanks - Solved it:

Trashed my network card, and reinstalled fresh - all sprang in to life

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you but I think I am experiencing the same. Until last week I was accessing my work VPN through dial-up, Outlook worked fine. Now with a cable modem and wireless router, I can connect to my VPN but when I launch Outlook, I get "MS Exchange Server not available." I select to work offline and then must do manual send and receives. Very odd indeed. I definately will post the solution if I stumble upon it before someone in the newsgroup.

Great Forum,

I needed some help with this same problem.

I just upgraded to Outlook 2003 at home and I have been connecting t
our exchange 2000 server to get my mail via the VPN using Outlook 200
for a few months now without any issues. But since I upgrade
yesterday- I have not been able to connect to the Exchange server. Th
settings are the same, but the logon screen has changed a little.

I have looked at my Registry per this 'ARTICLE
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830914&Product=out200
) below—but I did not need to change it!
So now I am lost~

Any ideas!

Thanks!!

The fix is pretty simple- but sure took awhile to find. To compound th
issue, there are multiple ideas out there on settings and registr
edits to change, none worked for me except if I change the server nam
XXXXX to its IP address. Works like a charm!

Have a great weekend
