Outlook 2003 constantly crashing.

J

JGraham

Hey all,

I'm not quite sure what triggered this to start, but for a couple weeks now
my Outlook 2003 has been crashing constantly. It seems to crash when I either
view the headers of an email (right click on email > options), or when I try
to open an email. If I have my preview pane on Outlook will randomly crash
when I switch to a new email to read. When it restarts the preview pane is
usually gone, and if I try to open an email Outlook will randomly crash.
Sometimes I get an error that Word crashes and it needs to restart (doing the
exact same things... IE opening an email), but most of the time it's Outlook
that crashes.

I have tried repairing my Office installation, and I have completely
uninstalled and reinstalled Office. Before you ask yes I do have all of my
updates.

Robert,

Thanks for the site suggestion! I had forgot to mention that we are running
an Exchange server here so I didn't actually run scanpst.exe. However, I did
notice the scanost.exe. After researching what it did it sounded like it
might fix my problem so I ran it and sure enough I haven't had any problems!
(Yet anyways, knock on wood.) Just wanted to drop you a note to say thanks
for pointing me in the right direction!

Gah! Spoke to soon. I knew I shouldn't have said anything until tomorrow. :)

Just delete the ost-file and have Outlook rebuild it automatically. It's
just a cache of the Exchange mailbox so you won't loose anything. If it's a
big mailbox you might want to do it when you are locally connected instead
through dial-up or some other slow connection.

Thanks Roady, but unfortunately Outlook is still crashing. What does Outlook
use to display email? Word? Could that be a problem? I'm just saying that
because when this first started happening I noticed the crashing program
would sometimes be Word. I never use Word really, and it would always happen
when I preview or open an email message.

Roady said:
Just delete the ost-file and have Outlook rebuild it automatically. It's
just a cache of the Exchange mailbox so you won't loose anything. If it's a
big mailbox you might want to do it when you are locally connected instead
through dial-up or some other slow connection.

Hey all,

I'm not quite sure what triggered this to start, but for a couple weeks
now
my Outlook 2003 has been crashing constantly. It seems to crash when I
either
view the headers of an email (right click on email > options), or when I
try
to open an email. If I have my preview pane on Outlook will randomly crash
when I switch to a new email to read. When it restarts the preview pane is
usually gone, and if I try to open an email Outlook will randomly crash.
Sometimes I get an error that Word crashes and it needs to restart (doing
the
exact same things... IE opening an email), but most of the time it's
Outlook
that crashes.

I have tried repairing my Office installation, and I have completely
uninstalled and reinstalled Office. Before you ask yes I do have all of my
updates.

Does it work correctly when you disable Cached Exchange mode?

Outlook isn't directly using Word for this. Word can be used as an e-mail
editor and to read Rich Text formatted messages. Both options can be found
in Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Format. Does it make a difference when you
disable both options? It will help determine if we should troubleshoot Word
or Outlook.

Hey Roady,

Well I found out what the problem was! First I tried disabling Cached
Exchange mode. Unfortunately it still crashed, but when Outlook rebooted the
next time I got an error message that said that a plugin from ACT (a
contact/calendar software) caused Outlook to fatally crash and would I like
to disable it. Of course I said yes, and it has been smooth sailing for the
last few days now. I curious as to why I never got that message until I
disabled Cached Exchange mode. Maybe it was just coincidence? (I don't think
so.) Also when I had checked the COM add-ins when we first started
troubleshooting this problem there wasn't anything listed. Unfortunately I
didn't write down the exact error message or filename but it was some DLL
file that was causing the problem. I still show ACT 2005 Extensions as
installaed anc checked in the Add-In Manager but I don't know if that has
anything to do with the file that was causing problems. At any rate I'm glad
this issue finally got resolved, and I just want to say thanks again for all
of the help in the matter - I'm sure I would have never found it out without
your help!

editor and to read Rich Text formatted messages. Both options can be found
in Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Format. Does it make a difference when you
disable both options? It will help determine if we should troubleshoot
Word
or Outlook.

Thanks Roady, but unfortunately Outlook is still crashing. What does
Outlook
use to display email? Word? Could that be a problem? I'm just saying that
because when this first started happening I noticed the crashing program
would sometimes be Word. I never use Word really, and it would always
happen
when I preview or open an email message.

Roady said:
Just delete the ost-file and have Outlook rebuild it automatically. It's
just a cache of the Exchange mailbox so you won't loose anything. If
it's
a
big mailbox you might want to do it when you are locally connected
instead
through dial-up or some other slow connection.

Gah! Spoke to soon. I knew I shouldn't have said anything until
tomorrow.
:)
Anyways, I've tried all of the suggestions from that website, and
Outlook
is
still crashing. Any other ideas? Thanks again for the help so far.

Hey all,

I'm not quite sure what triggered this to start, but for a couple
weeks
now
my Outlook 2003 has been crashing constantly. It seems to crash when I
either
view the headers of an email (right click on email > options), or when
I
try
to open an email. If I have my preview pane on Outlook will randomly
crash
when I switch to a new email to read. When it restarts the preview
pane
is
usually gone, and if I try to open an email Outlook will randomly
crash.
Sometimes I get an error that Word crashes and it needs to restart
(doing
the
exact same things... IE opening an email), but most of the time it's
Outlook
that crashes.

I have tried repairing my Office installation, and I have completely
uninstalled and reinstalled Office. Before you ask yes I do have all
of
my
updates.
