Outlook 2003: Emails only saved to Sent Items folder when connected to Exchange server

One of my clients is having a problem where her email will only be
saved to the Sent Items folder when she is connected to their network
which runs Exchange 2003.

She uses a laptop and visits various other clients of her own and
works from home.

She can send and receive via POP3, but once they are sent, like I
said, they do not appear in the Sent Items folder.

I have no idea why this would happen.
