Outlook 2003 envelope icons no longer show forwarding/replied to

My Outlook 2003 came up one day minus its envelope icons. When I added them
back (or so I thought) , I noticed now they never change, except from
"unread" to "read." I no longer get the blue and red arrows indicating that
I've forwarded or replied to a message. I can't find out how to get them
back.
