Outlook 2003 In Cached Mode Randomly Goes Offline

We're running Outlook 2003 on Windows XP SP2 and Office XP. All users are
networked with Exchange and are using Cached Exchange Mode. Some of them
report to me that Outlook is offline. For some, it goes "Connects" when you
click in the bottom right corner Offline | Work Offline. Some users, however,
are prompted for authentication credentials. What could cause Outlook to
randomly go offline and is there a way to prevent it?
