Outlook 2003 mail freezes then outlook shuts down

Hello

I have office 2003 on my computer. I have windows xp. Outlook 2003 opens ok but when I open an email I have problems closing it. If I hit file and close the email closes ok. If I do it the regular way and hit the x on the top right hand corner the screen freezes for a few seconds then a window appears saying there was a problem with outlook 2003. It has the normal windows option of sending an error report or not sending. When that error message is closed the email closes and then the whole outlook program closes. Any ideas?
