Outlook 2003 only plays default sound or none

All of a sudden (I suspect it's since I downloaded some updates to
Windows XP) my new mail notification sound, which was the Travel theme
asterisk, switched itself to the Windows XP notify sound. I have
tried:

Testing the travel theme asterisk sound
De-selecting and then reselecting the travel sound in the Control
Panel (this resulted in *no* sound when new mail comes in, not even
the Windows XP one)
Copying the travel theme sound to windows/media

I am not on an Exchange server, which apparently could cause a
problem.

Help! I hate that beeping, but I am not at my desk all the time and I
need the notification.
