Outlook 2003 process still running after exit

I've noticed that when I configure Outlook 2003 to "hide
when minimized" so that only an icon in the system tray
shows, the program (and the icon in the system tray)
continue to run even when I exit it. It seems the only
way to stop the process is to use the Windows Task
Manager.

Anyone with a similar experience and a solution?

Hiding it still means you are running it.

Note that you can open Outlook several times. When you click on the Outlook
in the Notification Area the "Open Outlook" option will expand to show all
available instances currently running.

I have the same problem independent of whether the 'hide
when minimized' is set. It is not an issue of
minimizing. It just won't always close. Sometimes it
will but not always. If it does not close you can't
backup the .pst because it remains open. I can't find a
solution either. Any help is appreciated.
