Outlook 2003 "reply" icon

I'm using Outlook 2003. I like the icon that you can see
in the inbox to indicate I have responded to a message (a
purple left-pointing arrow). The only way I can see it is
to use the Reader Pane - then it shows up. Any way to get
my message envelope icon to indicate replied to without
using the Reader Pane????
