When Outlook 2007 closes, one possible bug is that, an Outlook Icon remains
in the systray after the program has closed. Only Windows Task Manager
enables removal of the icon.

You prob. have an add-in running that keeps Outlook unnecessarily open.
Disable all add-ins via Tools, Trust Center, Add-Ins. The other
possibility is that you have some other software syncing with Outlook,
e.g. syncing software for handhelds (ActiveSync).
Outlook itself closes fine.

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click
either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.

Excellent Thought (Why didn't I think of this)?
Milly Staples touched on potential problems; all of which are installed on
our system: [1] Activesync 4.1 for our PDA phone; [2] FranklinCovey Plan Plus
for Outlook; [3] PC-cillin Internet Security 2006.
The question is: what is the next step? Removing all 3? That would be very
difficult to do.

Regarding [1]: ActiveSync will release Outlook if you disconnect the PDA
phone. It will keep Outlook open when you see Connected in the
ActiveSync window. For my PocketPC e.g., all I need to do is switch the
device off or remove it from the cradle, and Outlook is free to quite.
Regarding [3]: Special Outlook plugins/Outlook integration of virus
scanners is really not needed. The default online virus scanner that is
running anyhow will scan any item before it can become a threat anyhow,
so the additional Outlook scanning is redundant. If PC-cillin has
something like that, disable it (I don't know the product).
