Outlook 2007 BUG REPORTING

J

jasy

I hope it reaching MS team,

Outlook 2007 12.0.6316.5000 SP1 MSO

setup spam filters (Rules and Alerts) like in yahoo mail or hotmail, where I
could tell look for this keyword/phrase in email subject/body etc.

Rule Description:-
Apply this rule after the message arrives
with "keyword 1" or "keyword 2" or keyword 3" ... and so on.
and on this machine only.
delete it

when I click to test the rule by "Run Rules Now..."
it detects & delete those email in inbox as expected.

But, that's about it... when checking pop3 emails... all those emails that
match the rule NEVER get processed.

THIS IS A BUG

ANOTHER ISSUE:-
also currently Outlook 2007 does not have any functionality to report email
as spam (like in hotmail/yahoo mail) that goes to inbox without Junk
detection, like report this as spam etc it also allows to block email
address or email domain (joke... as all junk emails are send from fake
domains, so worthless).

It may not be a bug.

Do you have other rules enabled?

If a rule further down the list would also act on the message, the actual
deletion may not happen. Try making this rule first and adding 'stop processing
more rules' to the rule.

btw, I saw Outlook default Rule enabled, should I disable this too...
"Clear categories on mail(recommended)"
is this a default rule that Outlook 2007 comes with.

Finished my testing...

email does to delete folder as expected....

next enabled all filters...

email still went to delete folder.

I think I know what happened, since I am sending from my other account,
Microsoft does not detect this as spam as sender is not black listed, so it
gets processes & moved to deleted folder..

So if email is a real spam than Outlooks spam detection kicks in, & email is
send to spam folder instead of delete folder....

Once Outlook does not detect email to be spam, then filters kick in & does
their work... in this case move to delete folder.

Btw, I had this filter on always on top from day one, but seems outlook spam
detection takes preference only then filters are run.

Thanks

Should you? Doesn't matter much. I forget why it's a useful rule for the
Outlook folks to have included by default. There's no harm in leaving it
on, it shouldn't be effecting this.

Wait, are you saying that the messages you're trying to run against are going
to your Junk Email folder and not to the Inbox?

J

jasy

well it seems...
Outlook SPAM detection runs 1st

then rules are run in order.

But if SPAM is detected, email is moved to SPAM folder AND no filters are run.

but if SPAM is not detected then, filter processes it...
in my case move to delete folder if it matches keywords.

Correct, it has been like this since Outlook 2003 SP1. It was an end-user
requested change as Junk Email got filtered back to the Inbox because of
Junk emails meeting certain rule criteria.

This is worthless fearture to fight spam.

I would recommend added smart feature like, would you like to block future
messages with this subject & report this email you MS junk mail database.

Not to mention that if you have a Forward rule, you forward spam if it just
happens to match one of the rules. It was mentioned running the rule in
the inbox, I didn't think that the messages were actually not in the Inbox,
or I would have said that rules don't run on messages that the Junk filter
blocks.

So you mean this freely available addin from Microsoft?
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=53541292-ce94-4c5b-9127-b7d56f11b619

It's not in there by default for privacy reasons, to comply with different
legislation in various countries and some other concerns such as creating a
feeling of pressure to have people join the reporting program.. Therefore
they offer it as an optional addin so that you can decide if you want to
join in or not.

FYI: a lot of the learning for the Outlook, Exchange, Windows Mail and
Windows Live Mail junk email filter is done via Windows Live Hotmail as
well.
