I am about to upgrade from OUtlook 2000 to Outlook 2007 (mostly for the
greatly improved "display by conversation" option).
I am also going to connect to an Exchange server that I access through a
VPN. I won't have this VPN connected all the time, just occasionally.
Most of my e-mail comes from an Internet-connected ISP.
In testing the connection to the Exchange server on Outlook 2000, I find
that if the VPN is not connected, Outlook complains that it can't find the
message store, and the Outlook user interface (GUI) doesn't appear. The
Outlook.exe program seems to STILL run in the background, though, along
with MAPISP32 or MAPI-something. I can use Task Manager to kill
Outlook.exe.
This is very annoying.
Questions: 1) When I upgrade to Outlook 2007, can I tell it to not worry
so much if the Exchange server is not present, and to still connect to the
ISP mailbox, and run as if the Exchange server was not listed?
2) Can I have messages from the Exchange server appear in the inbox of the
"exchange" mailbox, and messages from my ISP appear in the inbox folder in
my local PST file?
3) Is there any way to force a background instance of Outlook.exe 2000 or
2007 to show its user interface?
Thanks a bunch for any help.
