Outlook account setup problems

I am trying to set up a new mail account with Ntl. I
have entered in all the correct details including the
servers etc. When I go into Outlook and click on
send/receive it comes up with the User name and password
and I click OK but an error message comes up with "cannot
connect etc." Can someone run through for me how to set
up an account, I believe I am doing it correctly but
obviously something is wrong somewhere! Many thanks
