Outlook and attachments

When I attach word docs to an email it arrives as a .dat
file that is impossible to open. These are straightforward
simple small word documents, like sample letters etc.
Same applies to small Excell spreadsheets, cannot attach
or arrives in a total mess.

Help is very much appreciated.

Change your email format to anything other than Rich Text (RTF).
