i am using a vpn connection to get my mail off my companies
exchange server from home. my sa set up another email acct
on my outlook so i could toggle between my work email and
my isp email address. now when i start up my vpn client
and then go to outlook i get an error stating something to
the effect of "exchange server unreachable". do i need my
work email and isp email on seperate profiles? am i not
able to receive my isp email while vpn into the network?
someone please help!

yes, they need to be in different profiles as outlook is directly connected
to the work servers when using vpn and my sites don't allow access to
outside accounts when using vpn.

Perhaps it is the issue, but this really depends on the VPN connection
config (and the security-consciousness of the admins) - given that it sounds
like his admin is the one who set up the Internet mail account for him in
Outlook, it may not be the case :)

outlook xp.

the funny thing. i have to do all of this from my laptop
because i can't even get my vpn/exchange to work from my
desktop which is about 5 feet away behind the same router
etc. when i start my vpn client everything works starts
normally, but when i try to set up my exchange mail account
and i enter the mail server/username and click "check name"
the mail server doesnt even validate me. it is the
weirdest thing i have ever experienced. so i got the lappy
that work(ed) fine to get my exchange mail and i got my
desktop that can only receive my isp mail.

thanks for all the help in advance. you guys are really great.

not only that. when i connect to my vpn on my desktop.
everything authenticates properly and i have a connection
but i cant even surf the internet or use any services
related to the internet on the desktop machine. on the
laptop i can use all inter/intra net features.

Then Diane's answer is the correct one - your VPN client is denying all
Internet traffic when you're connected, as a security measure. Your IT
person should have known this, I'd imagine! Try taking the Internet mail out
of your profile and start over.
