Outlook and Word

At times when a user tries to open an attachment in
Outlook (which is a word document) the entire machine
(Windows XP) freezes and in order to get back, the user
has to re-boot.

Would appreciate if some one could shed some light on this.

If the Word document get stored first to the desktop and opened then
everything works fine?
