Outlook can send but not receive

Outlook worked fine up to Oct., 2005. I didn't make any changbes buts
omething happened and now I click on the Send/Receive button the program
sends mail but when it trys to receive mail it stops and I am asked if I want
to send an error report and that MS Outlook must restart.

I've been abandoned by our IT dept. Is there anything that I cand do? I
really would like to resume using Outlook to get my emails.
