outlook is lying

My inbox says I have 3 new messages. I don't.. Its lying. So how do I
correct this.. Its not a major problem but distracting. Computers are
supposed to be always right....

As a sidelight to this. I deleted the Unread messages, thingy in the
favorite folder place. I thought I would bring that back and see if there
were some messages that were bad. I read the help file and it says to just
click on any file you want to add to the favorite folder. But its gone..
totally and completely there is no Unread Message line to click on.. What's
a person to do?

It sounds like you might have some errors with your pst. Run scanpst
(search under help on how to use it). As for getting the unread favorites
folder you can try a new profile, or maybe click on start and choose run and
type in the follow; outlook /resetnavpane

Any chance it's hiding unread-ignored messages, so they aren't in view, but
are registering as unread messages for that little blue "(3)" next to the
folder? View/Current View/Customize Current View: Filter, should read OFF.
Or just an unread message that is not recent. Add the READ colunm, and
sorting by that. (right click the Subject colunm heading and go Field
Chooser for the Read icon to drop in where you like)
I know it sounds basic, and stupid for me to suggest, but
sometimes...........

Unread Messages is one of the preset Search Folders choices in Outlook 2003.
Right-click the Search Folders folder and select New Search Folder, then
choose Unread Messages from the list. It will open as a subfolder to Search
Folders, and you can add it to the Favorite Folders list if you wish. If
messages appear in Unread Messages under the Inbox group, you know they
actually exist :)
