Outlook Issue

I've inadvertently discovered that Outlook is remaining
open multiple times in the Processes located in the task
manager. I'm running xp pro and office xp pro 2002. I
discovered this by accident one afternoon when another
program I use all the time wouldn't open. I did a ctrl
alt delete to open the task manager, clicked the
processes tab and OMG...Outlook was listed 15 times or
more as being open. Since then I have been able to pin
down when it happens. Just opening Outlook and closing
it without checking for or sending new mail does not
cause it to stay open as a process. Checking for or
sending mail does. If Internet Explorer is opened while
Outlook is open IE also remains open as a running process
as does word. I've started having to go to the task
mamager several times a day just top close all the open
processes of outlook due to the amount of memory it sucks
up.
