Outlook outbox

My Outlook suddenly developed a problem. When I send an
email, it automatically transfers to the outbox, and then
sends the message. The message remains in the outbox and
does not clear to the sent folder. It loses it's
italicise? font and it does send, but it doesn't clear and
it's really annoying as everytime I go to exit, it prompts
me if I'm sure I want to leave because I have messages in
the outbox.

Any help is apprecitated.
