Outlook sending fails

Wrote about 50 emails on a plane, got to a hotel, tried to send -- and
Outlook 2k3 hung (using Norton 2004). I tried a few times, and once it
started to send some mails but hung (little status bar appeared). Cancelled
that, moved all my outgoing to drafts folder, and sent -- Outlook is trying
to send 5 mails which arent in the outbox, and must be in some internal
queue. Wonder if this is the problem? Is there a way to clear that internal
queue?

Protracted send and receive gets this error

Task 'mail.bernieyee.com - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook
is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue
to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet
service provider (ISP).'

ARe you trying to use your ISP from a hotel wireless or wired Internet
connection? Have you tried setting up authentication for your ISP? Can you
send using Hotmail or Yahoo! or another webmail client?

Hotmail and web mail access works fine. Just tried it from my Sprint PCS PC
card modem, and that also similarly fails.

Seems like the mail is caught in some buffer, which Outlook is trying to
complete, but is unable to - or it may also related to NAV2004's mail scan
for virus before send...

1. Turn off the mail scanning in NAV - it causes send failures and multiple
deliveries.
2. Check the SBC site to see what authentication you need to set up to use
their mail on another ISP (hotel's) - many do not allow you to use their
servers unless you are either logged in or authenticating.
