Periodically outlook slows and tells me it's synchronising folders - exactly
WHAT folders is it synchronising?

It appears you either have an IMAP (AOL) account or an HTTP (MSN / Hotmail)
accounts. It can also be an exchange server accounts. So this synchronises
messages and other folders in your mail server to your outlook.

Also let me know if you use outlook connector.

Thanks Arun. I don't use an exchange server or Outlook connector. I entered
details of my Hotmail/Yahoo accounts only recently but this cenario has been
happening for ages, long before these were added. Any further thoughts would
be appreciated.

The synchronisation, as i told is that between the folders on your mail
server and those in outlook. Hotmail is an HTTP and probably thats what is
doing it. But it shouldnot be a concern because you have the control over it.
If you go to Tools -> Options -> Mail setup -> send receive , You ll see the
option to send receive every 5 minutes or so. You can configure it the way
you want. What this does is it makes sure that your outlook folders are
updated every 5 minutes ( or as what is the setting)
