Outlook Won't Access ISP Account

I am having a serious problem with my Outlook mail accounts. Things
were working well until I compressed my folders to reduce their size.
When I did that all of my e-mail account information was lost. I
reentered it but now two strange things have happened:

1. Outlook will not retrieve mail from one of the accounts although
the information is entered accurately, there is mail on the server and
the "test settings" button shows everything to work correctly;

2. When I choose the "accounts" drop down menu from the new message
screen I get an error message saying that a the operation has failed
and that a fatal error has occurred in Outlook.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thanks.
