Outlook won't install during Office 2007 upgrade

I have just installed the Office Basic 2007 Free Upgrade and Outlook did not
install. When I attempt to go the install program and Change, the Outlook
App. is X'd out. When I activated, the activation screen said that Outlook
did activate. What can I do to get Outlook installed? Thank you.

If you have a previous version of Outlook installed, you *must* uninstall it
before the 2007 version will install.

I realize this is an old post, but I have a very similar problem with a
twist. I CAN'T uninstall the old version and it no longer works!

Attempts to run or uninstall the old version indicate a "patch file" is
missing or not valid. I searched the knowledge base, found an article
indicating how to edit the registry to "fix" the patch file problem. (The
solution is to eliminate a line in the registry that isn't there, so that
isn't helping.)

I am quite dead in the water and scratching my head.
