I am using Outlook 2003.
When I click the "X" in the upper right-hand corner of Outlook's main
window, it closes the system tray icon as well.
I want the system tray icon to remain running.

Right click on the icon in the system tray and pick Hide when Minimized.
Now minimize Outlook rather than close it.

Outlook is not a service that runs in the background. Closing it means
closing it.
