Clearing a set of overdue recurring tasks requires a lot of work because the
reminder will not enable permanently until the next recurrence is not overdue.

If a recurring task becomes overdue and the reminder was not enabled, and an
attempt is made to enable the reminder, it is only enabled for that one
overdue instance.

So that instance of the overdue task appears on the reminder window, which
is marked complete, but the reminder of the next overdue instance remains
disabled, so it does not appear on the reminder window until it's reminder is
enabled.

Is there a better way of dealing with this?

As an alternative, I would suggest you to try Cute Reminder. It will
show you unobtrusive pop-up reminders, which are easy to delete or
postpone. You can also post sticky notes on your screen. The Pro
version can run in the system tray and synchronize with Outlook.
