Overallocation when assigning a resource to multiple task

I am having an overallocation problem when I assign a single resource for
multiple tasks. Say for example, Eric is assigned to two projects (Project A
& Project B), each takes 20hrs to complete and they come in on the same day.
But project B has a high prority that project A. So when assigned, I want
Eric to first work on the high priority project and then start with the
other one. When I assign things in project, it makes Eric work on both of
them (more number of hours for the high priority project and less on the
other) with a overallocation notice. Is there a solution to this?

Hi KT,

Yes.
Link both projects to a single resource pool (Help on Resource Sharing)
Now in this Pool use Resource Leveling (Help on Resource Leveling)
Sorry, a bit long to explain A-Z in one message.
Do not hesitate to come back with a more specific question should you have
one.

(And to follow a course on Project is not a luxury)

Hi KT,

First question, assuming you are talking about "work" hours and not
duration, your two projects total 40 hours of work. What is the duration of
these projects and their subsequent tasks? For example, a person can work 40
hours over one week at 100% utilization (assuming that's their "normal" work
week) or work 40 hours over 2 weeks if they are 50% utilized.

Second, if you want to level your resources using prioritized tasks, you can
assign a priority to each task where the higher the number (up to 1000...
with a default of 500) gets prioritized first. After you prioritize them,
you can use the leveling tool in Project. Be careful when using this feature
if you've never used it before. One cool thing is that you can "Clear" your
leveling attempts if you think you've messed something up.

I'm sure this will spur more questions... so I'll respond later if you have
them.

Best of luck!

Thanks for you reply. The levelling resources which didn't work for me in
Project 2000 did work in Project 2003.

Hi,

That means you gave some input invalidating it; it works pefectly (and the
same way as in 2003) in 2000.
