Overtype has life of its own

I have to disable overtype mode every time I type anything longer than a
paragraph. It simply turns itself on. Is it possible to disable it? Is
something I am doing enabling it?

The most likely thing is that you're accidentally hitting the Insert key
when you are aiming for Backspace, Delete, Home, End, or even Enter.

Can't you disconnect the Insert key from the overtype mode command in Tools
| Customize? if I remember correctly, someone suggested that, but I can't
remember exactly how it was done.
