OWA shows new email, regular Outlook '03 does not

J

JRC 99

Having an issue with a user who is not getting new email in "regular" Outlook
'03 since late last week. Running '00 MS Exchange. Have already performed
some MS KB article recommendations to troubleshoot sync and Inbox repair of
ost and pst files (all repaired OK). When looking at Inbox properties it
shows more email on server than offline folder but can't get new email to
come in. As a work around we have him using OWA which does show new email.
What else (settings, etc.?) should we be checking?

If Outlook 2003 is running in cached mode, does the same behavior happen
when you disabled cached mode?

If all looks good after disabling cached mode, I would put focus back to the
OST file. For example, how big is the OST file? How many items in the
Inbox? (Remember, if the OST is running in legacy [ansi] mode, then the
outlook client is still subject to file size/count limitations like just its
earlier versions.)

Will try to run with cache mode disabled, OST file is well under size limits
(14,000 KB, about 1,500 items); he also had a PST archive file (not on the
email server ~ 740,000 KB), well aware of the 2GB limits per mailbox

UPDATE: unchecked the cache exchange mode and that brought in all of the
newest email, I guess my question is why do we need to do this with this user
as by default this is left checked?

Out of curiosity, what service pack to you have applied to Office/Outlook
2003? Note: If not at Office 2003 SP2, I would recommend that it be applied
as I have seen weird cached mode sync issues before applying SP2 level.

Weird. What SP level is Exchange 2K at and are there any items in the
clients Sync Issues folders? The ideal solution is to get cached mode back
on rather than run in traditional mode.

Exch 2K is running on MS Server 2K on SP4; yes there were sync failures
listed in the client's folder, appeared to be only the Inbox failing,
calendar, sent items, etc. all sync OK. The MS article linked to the error
was similar to 842284; but as this was Outlook '03 not '00 couldn't do all of
the stuff listed. Also, as this was only one instance of an issue didn't
perform the stuff listing "damage to Exchange support files" as I would think
the issue would need to be more widespread before we would need to go to the
server level. We'll let this go as-is for a few days and then attempt to turn
the cache back on to see what happens unless you have other suggestions.

If possible, I would like to see the text of some of the sync error
messages. This might give me a clue as to what happened and/or I can bounce
it off a larger audience if I don't.

ps - you mentioned sp level for win2k, does this also mean that e2k has the
latest and greatest of sp3?

On the sync error, as the non-cached mode doesn't have any sync errors I went
back an enabled the cache and immediately had sync errors (just for the
Inbox), the specific text for the error is listed below, changed it back of
course to allow new email to still come in:

15:06:09 Error synchronizing folder
15:06:09 [80010114-3EE-80010114-560]
15:06:09 Unknown Error.

On our SP level; we've installed the rollup SP3 (MS note# 813840) whcih
actually calls itself SP4 under the installed programs logs on the server. As
it does seem we'll have a problem going enabled the cache again I would
appreciate your feedback.

Two trains of thought...

1) Does this person have business contact manager installed? or

2) Something is fishy with the Exchange database.

Chase down #1 first as the second would require taking the Exchange server
offline to run an integrity (isinteg) scan.
