"Page 1" appears in header of merged document

I have a Word document and am merging addresses into it. When I do
the merge, "page 1" appears in the header of every one of the 200
pages, though I can't for the life of me find it in a default setting
or in the header of the original Word document. Help would be
appreciated.

Have you looked in the Header of the mailmerge main document (View>Headers
and Footers). If you have the document open in Normal view, you will not
see the header.

Yes, I have looked there. I know how to edit the headers and footers.

But after I've merged, from page 2 of the merged document onwards, there
appears an additional header, a smaller one, and the only thing in it is
"page 1". It does not appear in the main document, nor on the first page of
the merged document.

Is there some kind of "find codes" feature someplace? Maybe I have inserted
a page number into my main document someplace, other than in the header,
that says to insert page numbers after the first page. But I don't know
where to look for that code. It is not in the header.

Hi Brent,

Could be that you have the a different first page header set up and before
the merge, the maindocument consists of only one page, but with inclusion of
the merged data it runs to two pages so that the primary header then becomes
available and it contains the page numbering. With the mailmerge main
document open, select the Page Setup button on the Headers and Footers
toolbar and go to the Layout tab and uncheck the Different First Page box
and see if you then see something in the Header area.

If you can't sort it out this way, email a copy of the main document to me
and I will take a look at it.
