Can I add a suffix to a page number such as "1a" or "1.1"?

Yes, View, Master page or Background, depending on the version. The numbering
will have a # symbol. Put the text either before the # or after.

Thanks. I tried it but when I added an "a" to a page the "a" appeared on all eight pages of the text. Did I miss something?

What version Publisher are you using?
If you are using Publisher 2002 and above you can insert a section, have the
page numbering start on each section.
