Page setup defaults to US letter on old A4 documents

When opening documents from Word 2001 on OS 9 in Word X on OS X all
documents appear to open as US letter when you attempt to print,
irrespective of what format they were saved in OS 9.

I'm running Office v10.1.3 on OS X v10.2.6
The OS 9 test machine is running Office 2001 Word v9.0.1 and OS 9 v9.1

However this seems to be consistent across the board with our existing
documents.

NB: I've set the default document size to A4 via Print Center and all new
documents do default to A4.

Anyone know of a fix?

Hi Gary:

Word obtains the paper size for an existing document from the document
itself. Regrettably, once it is wrong in a document, it remains that way
until it is explicitly reset and the document has been re-saved.

I am picking that the printer the OS 9 machine is using is not available to
the OS X machine. Under those circumstances, Word will fall back to its
defaults.

You need to ensure that your Normal template is set to the correct size.

1) Quit Word

2) restart Word

3) Close the blank document

4) Open the Normal Template in edit using File>Open

5) Use File>Page Setup

6) Choose Format For and select the specific printer you use.

7) Choose a Paper Size of A4>A4

8) Save the Normal Template

9) Quit Word

When you restart, your default printer should stick with the one you
selected, and your paper size should thus stick at A4.

The reason for first Quitting Word before you start is to ensure that it has
closed all its temporary files. If you don't, some of these may hold a
reference to Normal open in Memory. If they do, that will overwrite your
new settings when you next close Word.

If the printer ever becomes unavailable, your settings "may" revert again.
Sorry about that, I don't know how to fix that one. Word's hard-coded
default paper size is US Letter.
