Page x of y over multiple documents

This might help you, though it isn't exactly what you
asked for.

Rather than have the pictures embedded in MS Word, use
the "include picture" field, and point to the picture. I
did this in a huge document with over 200 .jpg pictures,
and many tables, and some word-art, and at 250 pages the
size is down to 1.5 mb.

The 'pictures' are actually screen shots. I would have to save them in another file. since I already have 65 pages of them, it would be lots of work going back to try this. (I would have to copy them out and save them elsewhere and then put in include picture). Also, I have circles and squares around parts of them so I'm not sure it would even work. Thanks anway.

If you save as html, you will get your pictures saved as separate files.
Still a lot of work to put them back in.

You've been told how you can link to the picture and the
picture will get injected, inspected, detected, infected,
neglected and selected; you've been told how to get your
pictures saved as separate files; what's the problem?
Your document will look the same - it's not as if you'll
get all kinds o' mean nasty ugly things sitting right
there on the line next to your picture. Your groovy
formatting will be safe - your file will just be smaller.
